The Tupperware party is back! This post-war phenomenon, which empowered housewives and enabled them to boost their household income through direct selling of plastic storage boxes, has enjoyed a recent resurgence in popularity thanks to the recession.
For any woman who longs for the independence and flexibility of working from home, becoming a Tupperware consultant might be the answer. This is a job that can be whatever one wants it to be: either a full-time career, with the opportunity to progress towards becoming a team-leader; or a way of earning a little extra money to pay for annual holidays or treats.
Consultants have all the benefits of being their own boss, but with the backing and support of a company with sixty years’ experience of direct sales. There is also the reassurance of knowing that Tupperware is a high-quality product with an excellent reputation. You do not even have to invest lots of money, because Tupperware will provide all the stock, marketing materials and anything else that you need to get the party started. No previous skills or experience are necessary either, as consultants receive professional training.
One of the main drawbacks to working from home is the sense of isolation; but for Tupperware demonstrators life is literally one long party, so it is the ideal job for anyone who enjoys socialising and meeting new people.
A novice consultant will gain confidence and experience by hosting a “starter” party for family and friends in her own home, with the assistance of a veteran demonstrator. This first party earns the hostess a basic Tupperware set for demonstration purposes, which can be added to at a good rate of discount for as long as she remains active with the firm.
The new consultant now recruits willing friends and colleagues to host further Tupperware parties where she can demonstrate and sell the company’s products. In this manner, the consultant can continually expand her potential customer base, rather than being restricted to her own circle of acquaintances. The hostess receives gifts of Tupperware products, and the demonstrator takes a percentage on all items sold.
There is no set formula for a Tupperware party – this is largely at the discretion of the hostess; but there will normally be snacks and drinks, simple cookery demonstrations and perhaps even a few fun games. It is the demonstrator’s job to assist the hostess and ensure that the party is a success. She will also bring along a range of Tupperware products and catalogues for the guests to peruse, and should be able to answer any questions that they have about the merchandise, as well as processing their orders.
This is a great way of selling. The party guests will be feeling relaxed and ready for fun, and in such a convivial atmosphere it is much easier to interest them in the products. Besides, having been made aware of the underlying purpose of the party when they were invited, they have already displayed a positive attitude simply by attending.
